December Headstone of Note: Fanny Dains

Born December 3rd, 1793, Fanny is buried very close to where The Union Church stood; her family might well have been among the very first congregants there. She was the second wife of Thomas Danes (note variant spelling), and mother of Charlotte Danes who died before she was a year old. Fanny died on the 3rd of February, 1816.

Her brownstone marker was in pieces and was professionally restored this past year by Stewart Preservation. Since brownstone is a sedimentary rock, it is prone to flaking or delamination which gets worse during the cold winter months. The black plastic covering will prevent water getting into the cracks in the rock preventing ice formation which would cause further damage.
