Maria Antoinette Conklin was born on February 6, 1850, to Nancy Catherine Smith, and Moses Alva Conklin, a wheelwright. Her brother, Theodore was born in June of 1851, and her sister Delphene was born in May of 1855. Her mother, Nancy Catherine Smith died in May of 1860. Maria Antoinette, known as Nettie, died on March 27, 1872, at just 22 years old having never married.
Her headstone reads
“Died March 27, 1872 Age 22 yrs. 1 mo. & 17 Days
Dearest Nettie thou has left us, Jesus called and you must go,
But we hope one day to meet you, In that world that’s free from woe.”
Nettie was part of a large Conklin family with connections to The Smith Family and The Sweezey Family, some of whom are buried in The Union section of the cemetery and many of whom had their headstones repaired this season.
This headstone was broken and laying of the ground for a number of years. Stewart Preservation was able to re-set it, installing steel pins to ensure that it stays erect. Volunteers will gently clean this headstone as soon as it’s safe to do so.
Maria Antoinette’s headstone was one of the larger headstones repaired this season with the help of private donations and grants from Suffolk County and The Robert Lion Gardiner Foundation for which The Friends of The Lakeview Cemeteries is grateful.
Stay tuned for more about the many other headstones and discoveries made this season!
