"Our Willie"
This is a sad one. Ten year old Willie Hammond, born September 4th, 1879, son of Herbert Fletcher Hammond and Lydia Frances Mott drowned in Patchogue Lake on January 25, 1890. His obituary read , “Willie, the ten-year-old son of Herbert Hammond, was drowned in Patchogue Lake on Saturday last. He and a number of other children were skating on the lake, though warned that the ice was not in a safe condition. It is supposed that Willie sat down to fasten his skates, when the ice suddenly gave way. He struggled for about ten minutes and then disappeared under the ice. A young Mr. Kelly, who attempted to rescue him, was with difficulty saved from a like fate.”
Willie’s headstone is one of many that were repaired, cleaned and one of a few that were added to our survey list. He rests near his parents in the Union section of the cemetery.
